Children and Adolescents
Children have special needs in the counseling office because talking alone is often not sufficient for them to demonstrate their thoughts and feelings or learn new behaviors. CCA offers a holistic approach in working with children including parent consultations, play and art therapy, and other creative ways to establish relationships and teach new skills. Therapists vary in how directive their approach is depending on personal style and the child’s age and the issues presented for therapy.
Adolescents are often caught in the difficult place between childhood and adulthood. CCA works hard to balance the adolescent’s need for privacy with a parent’s need for connection and authority.
Many of our staff have backgrounds as school counselors and are excellent at navigating the educational system if students have needs that can be supported in the school environments.
Whether it’s family conflict, anger or sadness, grief, divorce or self esteem issues, our staff who work with children and adolescents pride themselves on staying current with the latest treatment approaches and educational materials. Most importantly, they have a heart and passion for kids and see counseling as a way to make a lasting impact on a child’s life. ADHD, school refusal, separation anxiety, oppositional defiance, self mutilation, and substance abuse are more serious issues that often require longer treatment with which our staff are trained and experienced in treating.
