Treatment Approaches
Phil is excited about working with adolescents (12+) and adults as well as pre-married and married couples. Areas of experience include anxiety/depression, perfectionism, adjustment to change, divorce, parental relationships, behavioral problems at home or school, gifted/talented student issues, self-worth, social struggles, communication skills, and/or couple's relationship difficulties.
Men (young or old), especially, tend to think that we can “tough it out” or that “only really broken people seek counseling”. We therefore put an unnecessary stigma on seeking help. The reality is that we are all hurting people living in a broken world, and seeking help and healing is often the “manliest” thing we could do in a difficult situation. It is Phil’s goal to break down these artificial walls so that men can feel safe and start down a healing path.
In relationships we often wait until things are extremely broken to seek help, but Phil believes that proactive counseling, when times are good, can serve to strengthen the foundations of our relationships. That way, when tough times come (because they will), they can make it through to the other side, stronger than before. If your relationship is under extreme stress, there is always hope, and we will work together to rebuild commitment, rediscover love, and revitalize passion. Phil has been trained in the Gottman Method and utilizes interventions from Gottman's Sound Relationship House Theory in all of his couples counseling.
The establishment of a therapeutic alliance is critical – to be heard, felt, and supported in a judgment-free zone. Phil integrates aspects of Rational Emotive Behavioral (REBT), Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), Emotionally Focused (EFT), and Solution-Focused (SFT) therapies into a consolidated approach that is tailored to your unique situation and needs. When requested, he is happy to integrate Christian counseling into his approaches.
Education and Training
Phil graduated in 2019 from Amberton University with a Master of Arts, Professional Counseling degree. Phil also holds an MBA from Amberton and a BS in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University.
Phil has worked as a small group leader/facilitator with 6th-12th grade young men for over four years at his local church, as part of their Student Ministries team. Phil is a self-proclaimed "nerd" and his background in the honors and gifted programs has placed him in a unique position to connect and work with many students from those backgrounds.
Background and Experience
Phil is an avid hunter and loves working with his hands – whether it is wrenching on his vehicles on the weekend, building a custom smoker, hog hunting, or making improvements around the home. He loves helping others, and can often be found volunteering at his church or at a local non-profit, helping a friend build or fix something, or helping someone move.
Phil is married to an amazing woman and has four wonderful young adult "children" – three are Aggies (two attended Texas A&M, and one attended Colorado State, now known as the Rams) and one is attending UNT in Denton. His wife is also an LPC Associate, having completed her Master of Arts, Professional Counseling degree from Liberty University.
Phil currently holds a full-time quality management position (in addition to the part-time counseling) at a large defense contractor, and has held past positions working with cutting-edge fiberoptic technologies for some of the largest Telecom and Datacom companies in the world.
Personal Statement
Counseling represents a significant change in career for Phil, but one that he believes was directed by God. Genesis 50:20 (NASB) - "As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result..."
He states “I am not perfect, by any measure – I have probably struggled with the same or similar things that you have, so I am honored to have the opportunity to wrestle with them together with you. I believe that God, through the Holy Spirit, is the best source of true and lasting healing, so I am very happy to include Him in our counseling sessions, through prayer, Bible reading, bibliotherapy, and devotions.”
