Background and Experience
Heather works with teens (14+) and adults. She treats individuals struggling with life transitions/changes, low self-esteem, self-harm and/or suicidal thinking, behavioral problems at home and/or at school, anxiety, anger, grief and loss, social struggles, relationship struggles, family conflict, divorce, and depression. Her special interests include working with individuals who are struggling with low self-esteem, anger, anxiety, self-harm, depression, and life/relationship challenges; and the population she enjoys most is adolescents and adults in their 20-30s. Heather utilizes various counseling approaches based on each clients needs and goals, including Cognitive-Behavioral, Person-Centered, and Solution-Focused Therapy.
Heather has had experience working at the Collin County Children's Advocacy Center, which focuses on helping children (ages 3-18) and their families who have experienced child abuse and neglect, while also working with other presenting issues. Heather also worked for a local non-profit called STARRY Counseling, which provides counseling to children and teens (ages 3-18) and their families. While working at the Children's Advocacy Center and STARRY, Heather gained much experience working not only with the individual but with the family as a whole, and also provided parental support/counseling as needed.
Personal Statement
Life is often times full of challenges. A lot of times, we can doubt ourselves and others, lose hope, lose confidence and even lose faith during those challenges. I am passionate about helping people move through debilitating emotional and/or spiritual obstacles so they can live rich lives interpersonally and contribute to the community at large. A warm, empathetic relationship between a counselor and client provides the context where growth and change can take place.
I am married to a wonderful man and I have three kids (2 step kids and 1 biological). In my spare time, I enjoy working out; cooking; hanging out with my friends and family; singing; eating; laughing; watching movies; and being outside. My Christian faith is the foundation of my life! I am involved in a local church and have also spent many years in youth ministry.
Education and Training
Heather received her Bachelors of Science in Rehabilitation Studies with a Minor in Psychology from the University of North Texas. She then received her Masters of Science in Counseling at Southern Methodist University.
